Finally, I came out in a little wooded area that bordered the north side of the west lobe of the lake (the lake's a weird shape, looks a bit like a cow's digestive tract). I heard some stomping off to my right and pointed my camera at the sound, just in time to see the back end of a deer fleeing thru the trees. I decided that I must be making too much noise so I continued on, creeping up to the lake as quietly as I could, wondering if the day would ever come when I might be lucky enough to see some part of a deer in my viewfinder besides his hind end. I saw the sun glinting off the water thru the trees, and something else... something bulky. It was another deer! I crouched down and fired off a few shots thru the holes in some brush just in case I didn't get another chance, then started to work on getting closer. The deer was drinking and didn't seem to notice me. I fianlly got close enough to get this shot. It wasn't until I got home that I noticed that there were wood ducks in the background of every single photo I took of the deer (here you can see one just to the right of the deer's tail).
