Probably the Mustang's most recognizeable feature is the ventral scoop for the radiator. Heated air exiting from the rear actually provided some thrust. Early Mustangs had an Allison engine that restricted it to low altitudes and ground attack duties. But when paired with the Rolls Royce/Packard Merlin engine, it became what many consider the best fighter of WWII.
