Up Great Blue Herons on the Riverwalk - Easter Sunday, 2008 Prev Next Slideshow

Heading back out for more twigs. These birds would fly off in all directions, often circling around once or twice before approaching the nest. This photo showing the bird's neck extended is somewhat unusual... more often they prefer to fly with their necks curled back tightly against their bodies. These are rather imposing yet delicate birds. They typically stand four feet tall and have wingspans approaching seven feet. Yet for all that, they seldom weigh more than eight pounds.
