This amazing shot looks almost like two birds colliding in mid air. It is actually a single bird that is extremely contorted. My guess is that he missed the insect he was aiming for and is simultaneously trying to stop in midair (as evidenced by the raised tail) while reaching back over his shoulder and behind his wing to grab the insect. I never imagined these birds could twist themselves around to such an extreme degree. Just looking at this photo makes my neck sore. |
