Columbus is on the Fall Line, which is the remnant of what was once the prehistoric seacoast. Here, the Chattahoochee drops many feet over the course of a few miles so a series of dams was built to harness the power for local industry. As water is released or held back by these dams, this rocky area of the river may be exposed or submerged. The rocks catch a lot of driftwood, from small limbs to large trees like this one.
